Hepworth Gallery September 2019

From a personal point of view I would say that this gallery is small, but rather like Hepworth’s work, perfectly formed.

I have been a life long lover of Henry Moore’s sculpture, his rhymical large bodies that undulate with mass have always drawn me to them… But now I have a new delight, Barbara Hepworth.

There are several coincidences with Moore and Hepworth. Both attended Leeds School of Art from 1920 – 1921. Hepworth would have been 17 at the time, while Moore was an ex-service man of 22. In 1921 they both moved to London to attend the Royal Collage of Art.

After graduating, Moore spent six months in France and Italy in 1925. This is where he first became aware of the Chac-Mool figures of Chichen Itza and this coupled with his admiration of Constantin Brancusi’s (1876 – 1957) work inspired him and also (in my opinion) can be seen in Hepworth’s work.

Shown below is a selection of Hepworth’s work I enjoyed.

I was interested to see Hepworth’s artwork. I enjoyed its abstract nature and felt I could see elements of Kandinsky in them.

There was also a replica of her impressive Winged Figure, the original of which is on the Flagship John Lewis building in London. I took several photos of this as I found the shape, size and texture incredibly interesting.

It is certainly a gallery I intend to revisit, as it not only showcases Hepworth and Moore’s work, but also a changing exhibition of other artists. Below I have highlighted a work (Knit) by German artist Alexandra Bircken (b.1967). When I initially viewed it, from a distance, I thought it was a painting. I was amazed at how the artist had been able to show the areas of light and shade so effectivly. Walking and standing next to it I was shocked to find it wasn’t a painting but a sculpture of interlocking steel shown to represent a basic knitting stitch. I was so taken with it, that I took several photographs of it from different angles, then altered the colour saturation of the flurescent tubes which I thought went beautifully with the piece.
