ART265 Work Related Project. The Beacon Centre 2/2

In part one of this blog I explored how I decided upon my imegery for my six foot canvas. This blog shows how I used practice pieces to help me understand how I would tackle the larger painting.

Having chosen an image I liked (from the large selection I took down at the Fish Quay) I edited it in several ways until I was happy with it.

Over the months I completed a range of smaller studies on aspects of the composition. I spent a long time trying to get the right blend of colours. I undertook a medium sized canvas (A1) to try and work out some of the areas of layout. I then moved to a canvas stapled to my studio wall to work on a smaller aspect of the image, but at a larger size. I also worked on how I wanted to work the different aspects of the water.

The advantage of this preparation work was that it allowed me the opportunity to test out how the items were going to sit together and what I needed to change to enhance the image. I was pleased to take on the advice of my Tutor, Dr O’Rourke in respect of the question of perspective, going back to the Fish Quay and taking more photographs enabled me to work these issues out.

Over the past few weeks I have been working on my 6 foot canvas.

Completed Canvas

On completion of all the student’s works there would have been an opening of our work at the Beacon Centre. Sadly, with the Covid 19 outbreak things such as this are postponed. However I have generated a “mock-up” image using a photo I took at last years opening. I have placed my new work next to my seagull from last year. It would be lovely if we can get to the stage where hanging these new works can be done.
